Overall Oscars commentary (Updated Feb. 18, 2025): Final Oscar voting closes today at 5 p.m. PT, and the mad dash to submit ballots is in full swing.
Pundits and awards obsessives are clinging to precedent, using the DGA, PGA and BAFTA winners as road signs through an otherwise unpredictable season. But the truth is, plenty of question marks remain across multiple categories.
Edward Berger’s “Conclave” stunned at the BAFTAs, taking home best film, adapted screenplay (Peter Straughan), editing (Nick Emerson), and outstanding British film. Seemingly overnight, this tense religious thriller has gone from dark horse to legitimate challenger, putting real pressure on the presumed frontrunner, “Anora.” If the drama can pull off a SAG ensemble victory, watch out for this one.
And yet, “Anora” boasts a nearly insurmountable winning streak — DGA, PGA, Critics Choice, and WGA. That powerhouse combination has only failed to translate into an Oscar win once in history (“Brokeback Mountain”).
Across the Atlantic, BAFTA also delivered one of the ceremony’s biggest shockers: Mikey Madison pulled off a jaw-dropping upset, dethroning the heavily favored Demi Moore (“The Substance”) to win leading actress for her performance in Sean Baker’s dramedy. It was a reminder that nothing is ever indeed locked in until the envelopes are opened.
Meanwhile, in the other acting races, Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”), Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”), and Zoe Saldaña (“Emilia Pérez”) look nearly unbeatable after racking up wins at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, and BAFTA. If any of them take the SAG Award, history is firmly on their side — only one actor has ever lost the Oscar after sweeping all four major televised awards (Russell Crowe for “A Beautiful Mind”).
But SAG habitually throws curveballs, often favoring broad populist appeal. This year, that could work in favor of “Wicked” or “A Complete Unknown,” which led to the SAG nominations. Historically, at least one of the two most-nominated films at SAG wins something. That could be good news for “Wicked,” whether through an ensemble win or a victory for Ariana Grande. As for “A Complete Unknown,” its best shot might be a last-minute surge from Timothée Chalamet or a shocking trophy for his co-star Monica Barbaro.
With a volatile season, expect at least one or two twists before the final credits roll on Oscar season. Updated predictions are below.
