September 2025 at HBO Max includes an all-new Mark Ruffalo-led series that is sure to be a hit and a spooky-themed competition that is perfect for the Halloween season. After waiting for several months following its cable debut, fans of one of the biggest animated sitcoms will finally be able to stream its latest season, too. Here are the five best TV shows streaming on HBO Max in September 2025.

5) On The Case with Paula Zahn

True crime fans have something new to stream this September! Emmy-winning journalist Paula Zahn’s ID newsmagazine program On the Case with Paula Zahn returns for Season 28 on HBO Max on September 25, 2025. The new season will stream on the platform alongside Seasons 4-2 and once again sees the veteran journalist stepping out of the studio and into the field to unravel shocking crimes. Season 28 tackles cases that involve the murder of a beloved restaurant owner, a teenager kidnapped out of her own bed, and a series of murders on a scenic bike trail.

The journalistically driven series goes beyond a surface level headlines of crimes by offering an in-depth exploration of the cases, showcasing the full impact they had on those directly involved and the wider community. The series features interviews with those directly impacted by the cases, including law enforcement officials, victims’ family members, and even incarcerated individuals, and highlights cold cases, forensic breakthroughs, and lesser-known cases.

4) Guy’s Grocery Games

Guy Fieri is one of the most beloved culinary figures in the world, and he’s bringing his infectious personality and charm to HBO Max. Season 39 of the Emmy Award-winning restaurateur, author, and Food Network star’s competition series Guy’s Grocery Games started streaming on HBO Max on September 3, 2025, joining Season 38 on the platform.

Relentlessly entertaining across all of its seasons, the fast-paced and high-stakes Food Network show sees four chefs put their culinary skills to the test in a series of elimination challenges, but first they have to make their way through the aisles of Flavortown Market to find their ingredients, encountering unusual challenges along the way. The winner can collect up to $20,000 in a shopping spree bonus round. Fieri brings his lighthearted and fun personality as host of the show, which is all-around fun for the entire family.

3) Halloween Wars

HBO Max is cooking up some terrifyingly good Halloween thrills. This September, Food Network’s long-running seasonal program Halloween Wars returns for its 15th season. New episodes will stream the next day on HBO Max, with the Season 15 premiere kicking things off beginning September 22, 2025. Jonathan Bennett returns to host the competition, which sees seven teams of the best cake, sugar, and pumpkin artists in the world competing to create daringly delicious edible Halloween creations for the chance to win the $50,000 grand prize. This season’s creations include depictions of childhood monsters and inspired takes on the boogeyman’s evil lair and feature “some of the spookiest and most mouthwatering displays yet.”

The Halloween season is known for jump scares and terrifying monsters, but Halloween Wars packs a different form of fear – from massive kitchen mishaps that threaten the bakers’ final creations to plenty of heart-pounding moments as the timer ticks down to zero. It’s an infectiously fun show that is a great watch for the entire family.

2) Task

A new dark and gritty crime drama hits on HBO and HBO Max this month, and it promises to be just as gripping as other prestige titles like Mare of Easttown. HBO’s seven-episode series Task, led by Mark Ruffalo and Tom Pelphrey, is scheduled to debut on HBO on September 7, 2025, at 9 p.m. ET and will be available to stream on HBO Max at the same time. New episodes will debut weekly after the premiere.

The upcoming series is created and written by Brad Ingelsby, the creator of Mare of Easttown, and set in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Task is set in the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia and stars Ruffalo as an FBI agent tasked with heading a task force to put an end to a string of violent robberies led by an unsuspecting family man, portrayed by Pelphrey. Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Thuso Mbedu, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, Raúl Castillo, Silvia Dionicio, Phoebe Fox, and Martha Plimpton also star.

1) Rick and Morty

Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty Smith are getting into more wild adventures this month. Following its release on Adult Swim earlier this year, all 10 episodes of Rick and Morty Season 8 made their streaming debut on HBO Max on September 1, 2025. The platform also streams the seven previous seasons of the beloved animated sci-fi comedy.

Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, Rick and Morty centers around a mad scientist who drags his grandson on crazy sci-fi adventures that often have potentially harmful consequences. The series debuted in 2013 and has become known and loved for its blend of absurd sci-fi, humor, intricate world-building, self-aware characters, and character-driven storytelling. Season 8, which introduced Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden as the new voices of Rick and Morty, is just as hilarious and absurd as the rest and even holds a rare 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Its audience score sits at 68%.
