Anthony Richardson’s brother Corey is “like a son to him”
The Indianapolis Colts’Anthony Richardson is more than just a big brother to his younger sibling Corey Carter.
“He’s pretty much my father figure,” Corey told NFL Network’sCameron Wolfe of Anthony in 2023. “He’s always been there for me – a big role model. In everything he does, he inspires me.”
Anthony and Corey are the sons of LaShawnda Cleare, who told Wolfe that “Corey is like a son to” his older brother. “Literally. They couldn’t be any closer,” she said.
After being selected by the Indianapolis Colts the night of the 2023 NFL Draft, Anthony credited his sibling with helping him “get to this point.” He said, “Just being my little brother, you pushed me to be the best.”
In his introductory press conference the day after the 2023 Draft, the quarterback said that it “feels good” to know that Corey looks up to him.
“Just doing this, and knowing that he’s looking up to me, it feels good. I just got to keep pushing so when his time comes, he can be way better to me,” he said at the time.
Here’s everything to know about Anthony Richardson’s brother, Corey.
Anthony cared for him when their mom worked
According to Wolfe, a reporter for NFL Network, Anthony and Corey’s mom moved her family from Miami to Gainesville when her sons were 10 and 3, respectively.
Wolfe reported that the NFL player would take his brother to school and pick him up, in addition to getting him fed and doing “everything else in between while his mother worked.”
He also plays football
Like his big brother, Corey plays football. The aspiring professional player told Wolfe that he eventually wants to follow in Anthony’s footsteps and play in the league.
Corey appears to be on his high school’s football team in Westfield, Indiana. In September 2023, Corey shared a photo on Instagram of himself from behind dressed in a football uniform. “Gotta love the sport!” he captioned the picture, and has since posted several more photos showing him in uniform on the field, both solo and with another player.
His brother is a “father figure” to him
Anthony is not only a brother to Corey, but also like a father. Corey described his older sibling to Wolfe in 2023 as “pretty much” his “father figure.”
“He’s always been there for me — a big role model,” Corey said.
Although Cleare raised her boys as a single parent, Anthony is said to have a relationship with his father, Will. The athlete described the relationship to NFL Network’s Wolfe as “a work in progress, not a fairy tale father-son bond.”
“We’ve both been through stuff in our lives, but we’re working to get that chemistry,” Anthony said of himself and his dad.
He’s gone viral online before
Corey went viral the night of the 2023 NFL Draft for his deep voice and neck tattoo. Anthony’s then-13-year-old brother spoke in a red carpet interview with his mom and brother, telling Sunday Night Football host Melissa Stark, “This is very special to me. Especially because I look up to him as much and I’ve always wanted to be like him.”
Corey’s neck tattoo and deep voice also caught the attention of 2023 NFL Draft viewers. While he was wearing a black turtleneck under a jacket, Corey’s ink, seemingly of a cross, was still visible on his neck.
He made Anthony cry after getting drafted
After he was drafted to the Colts, Anthony was brought to tears by words of support from his little brother.
In a video message, Corey said, “Dear Anthony, I just want to take this moment to express how incredibly proud I am of you. You have accomplished so much and have shown so much determination throughout your life. Your hard work and dedication has paid off in so many ways, and it is truly inspiring to see the person you have become, whether it is your academic achievements, your athletic achievements or your personal growth.”
He continued, “You have constantly pushed yourself to be the best you can be. I am honored to have a brother like you, and I am grateful for the examples you have set for me and others. Keep up the great work, and know that I’m always here to support you on all your future adventures. I love you, bro.”
Anthony began to cry as he watched the recording of Corey speaking, with the camera showing his emotional reaction after his brother’s message had concluded.
He and Anthony have their own handshake
Corey and Anthony showed off their brother handshake in a video posted by the Colts in July 2023.
The NFL player’s platform, The Fine Print, also shared the video on Instagram a few weeks later, writing, “Gameday. Family. Nothing better!”
Anthony wanted more for his brother
In an article for The Players’ Tribune, Anthony reflected on the way he grew up, revealing that he sometimes didn’t have food to eat and didn’t always have new clothes. However, he added that his mom “always worked for everything. Didn’t question it, didn’t complain. She just did what she had to do.”
Anthony also admitted that while he might not have been able to go to as many football camps, “not everybody had a mom like mine.” He explained he had learned from his mom and is “glad that’s the life I got dealt, the one God gave me, because it’s made me who I am today.”
“It put something different inside of me. It’s given me a different drive and a different vision. I didn’t want my mom to have to struggle anymore, and I definitely didn’t want my little brother to have to have the same life I did growing up,” Anthony added.
Anthony doesn’t want his brother to change
Anthony has offered his younger brother wise words of advice.
“Don’t try to be like me. Be better than me,” he advised Corey in a video shared by the NFL. The touching words came after Anthony had watched a video of his younger brother congratulating him for getting drafted by the Colts.
The quarterback also encouraged his sibling to pay no attention to critics.
“A lot of people are going to hate on you cause you’re my brother, you know? But that don’t mean nothing,” Anthony said. “You’re your own man. You’re going to be great, you know, too. Don’t listen to the critics, you know. Just grind hard, perfect your craft and just be the best version of yourself, you know, and never change. Never change, man. Keep being you.”
Corey is an uncle
Corey became an uncle when his older brother welcomed his first child, sonAnthony Richardson Jr., with his high school sweetheart, Jada, in March 2024, according to The Athletic.
“I was always looking forward to being a dad … I was actually the first person to hold him when he was born and everything,” Anthony later told The Athletic.
Becoming a father has motivated Anthony, a self-described “grinder,” to “go harder.” He said, “I thought I was going hard before, but now with him, I gotta feed another person.”
