The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a recall on a popular brand of apple juice in 28 states, including New Hampshire.

The agency said the juices could potentially be contaminated with patulin, a toxin produced by mold, according to the National Library of Medicine. It is usually found in rotting apples, meaning the recalled juices could have been made with apples that went bad.

The recall was initially issued in March but upgraded to a Class II recall this week, the agency’s second most serious class.

Which apple juices have been recalled?

More than 7,000 cases of Martinelli’s apple juice has been recalled across the country, including in New Hampshire. With six packs per case and four bottles per pack, that means more than 173,000 bottles of apple juice are involved in the recall.

The affected products can be identified by the best by date Dec. 5, 2026, or the UPC code 0 41244 04102 2. There is also a full list of the affected product’s batch numbers on the FDA’s website.

The apple juices are sold in clear glass bulb-shaped bottles. In 2020, the plastic bottle version of the product was the subject of a popular TikTok trend in which users bit into it to see if it resembled biting into an actual apple.

Why did Martinelli’s recall its apple juice?

According to the FDA, the apple juices could be contaminated with patulin.

Patulin is a toxin produced by mold, according to the National Library of Medicine.

It is commonly found in rotting apples, and the amount found in apple products is “generally viewed as a measure of the quality of the apples used in production,” according to the NLM.

What to do if you have recalled apple juice

Anyone who has purchased the Martinelli’s apple juice included in the recall should not consume it and instead discard the product.

Customers can also return the product to the place of purchase for a refund.
