Lakers guard Austin Reaves chose an interesting player to show love to before the NBA season.
On Wednesday, the NBA’s official X account posted a video in which select players were asked who they believed deserves their flowers.
Most players named guys who are typically underappreciated or underrated by sports media or the broader fan base, like Jrue Holiday or DeMar DeRozan.
When it came time for Reaves to give his answer, he said, “I think Wemby. Everything that, you know, he’s gonna get, already has gotten, is well-deserved.”
Reaves is getting roasted by Lakers fans for deciding to give Spurs star Victor Wembanyama his flowers, many of whom are baffled that he decided to show one of their biggest Western Conference foes this sort of love right before the season begins.
“ik reaves did not js say wemby,” wrote @lukawrldd.
“reaves is actually a b****,” added @ADHDgoat.
“this dude reaves said wemby 😭,” said @VACCLNE.
Some of this frustration also stems from how Reaves is referencing everything Wemby is still going to accomplish in his career, which will have to come at the Lakers’ expense.
But more than that, Wembanyama gets a ton of love from the NBA and mainstream media as it is, which makes him a strange pick for someone who deserves to receive their flowers.
Reaves will have to show Lakers fans that his Wemby praise is irrelevant when these teams face off for the first time Nov. 27.
