A toddler found by a couple near South Hannifin Street in Bismarck on Monday is now in the custody of social services as authorities investigate his disappearance from home.

The boy, estimated to be between 1 ½ and 2 years old, apparently wandered off from his home and was found by a couple who alerted police about 20 minutes later, according to police spokesperson Officer Lynn Wanner.

Officers responded to the call and canvassed the neighborhood, knocking on some doors in an attempt to learn more about the child or locate his residence, according to Wanner.

The toddler was then brought to police headquarters and the incident was posted to the department’s Facebook page around 11:15 a.m.

Wanner told the Tribune that the parents were ultimately located and interviewed, and the child is in the custody of North Dakota Health and Human Services while an investigation continues. The department updated its social media post at 12:06 p.m. Monday, alerting the public that the parents of the child had been found.

Authorities did not release the names of the child or his parents.

As the case is still active, Wanner said she couldn’t release any more details regarding how the child went missing.

The Bismarck Police Department posted the child’s photo, along with a request for information that prompted hundreds of comments. Many of those comments expressed concern about a scab on the boy’s forehead. Authorities didn’t comment on the apparent injury.
