Comedian Chelsea Handler took a swipe at First Lady Melania Trump on Friday at the Critics Choice Awards, suggesting Mrs. Trump was a sex worker.
“It was a huge year for biopics,” Handler said during her opening monologue while listing off some notable films. “A Complete Unknown about Bob Dylan, Maria about Maria Callas, and Anora about Melania Trump.”
Anora is a critically acclaimed film that follows a young prostitute (Mikey Madison) who marries the son of a Russian oligarch.
Handler introduced herself as the event’s “DEI host,” referring to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives – something President Donald Trump has made a priority in dismantling.
“I am your DEI host, Chelsea Handler. I want to acknowledge that we’ve been through a lot lately, not just here in Los Angeles, but in our entire country, waking up every day, not knowing what news we are going hear that will disappoint and horrify us,” she said. “So it is important in times like these to have a distraction and that’s why I want to personally extend my gratitude to Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively.”
Justin Baldoni directed and starred in the 2024 drama It Ends With Us alongside Blake Lively, who later accused him of sexual harassment and fostering a hostile work environment. The director has denied her claims and fired back, claiming Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds, and her friend Taylor Swift hijacked the film.
Baldoni’s lawsuit has been fodder for entertainment media.
Handler also took aim at Cheryl Hines, the actress wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s nominee to lead the Health and Human Services, during her Friday monologue.
The comedian, who hosted two previous Critics Choice Awards, joked that those who lost out on their awards would be “in the background, questioning your life choices, like Cheryl Hines at a Senate confirmation hearing,” referring to Hines attending Kennedy’s Senate hearings.https://www.imdb.com/title/tt28607951/
