TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A joint session of Congress convened Monday to certify the results of the 2024 Presidential election.
Vice President Kamala Harris led the process of officially certifying Donald Trump’s win. The certification will come exactly four years after violent insurrectionists attempted to obstruct Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election.
But on Monday, the transfer of power unfolded peacefully and ceremonially.
Harris received a standing ovation after she led the certification. It is her duty as vice president to lead that transfer of power.
Her role was poignant and historic as she certified the election of her opponent Donald Trump after she lost the race for the White House in November.
Four years ago, Trump asked his former Vice President Mike Pence not to uphold the election results. Despite overwhelming evidence that the election was fair and accurate, then-President Trump denied the results saying he had lost to now-President Joe Biden.
Hours after terror ensued as a mob infiltrated the Capitol, the complex was once again secured. Congress gathered again, and Pence fulfilled his role as vice president, declaring that Biden won the election.
