A cucumber recall is affecting 26 states and five Canadian provinces, according to a warning from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration – and North Carolina is on the list.
The recalled vegetables were from Arizona-based SunFed Produce, LLC. A voluntary recall was issued due to possible salmonella contamination. Cucumbers were shipped packaged in a bulk cardboard container with a “SunFed” label, a generic white box, or a plastic black crate and sold between Oct. 12 and Nov. 26, 2024.
The company issued the recall after the FDA notified it that the cucumbers were associated with reported salmonellosis illnesses between Oct. 12 and Nov. 15. The FDA has not released the number of people affected, and no deaths have been reported.

What to do if you bought recalled cucumbers
The FDA advises consumers to check for recalls of any recently purchased whole American cucumbers. If you purchased the recalled vegetables, throw them out and clean and sanitize any surfaces they may have encountered to avoid cross-contamination.
Contact your retailer if you’re unsure if any cucumbers you bought are included in this recall. Contact your healthcare provider if you think you’ve consumed any recalled cucumbers and feel sick. You also can call SunFed’s recall hotline at 888-542-5849, Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. EST.

Where were the recalled cucumbers sold?

The cucumbers were also shipped to the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Calgary, Saskatchewan and Ontario. Food service and retail outlets outside of these areas may also have sold them, the FDA said.
What is salmonella?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describe salmonella on their facts page as “bacteria that make people sick.”
Salmonella can make people ill with diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps that can last from four days to a week. The CDC said symptoms usually begin six hours to six days after infection. Most cases of Salmonella infections pass, but some people may need to be hospitalized.
The CDC said salmonella bacteria cause “about 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths in the United States every year.” Food is the source for most of these illnesses.
