Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) ripped former Vice President Kamala Harris for telling “blatant lies” in her book published earlier this year.
The Atlantic’s Tim Alberta sat down with Shapiro ahead of the release of Harris’ book, “107 Days”, earlier this fall. Alberta specifically asked Shapiro about an excerpt from the memoir, in which Harris described interviewing the governor during the vice president selection process.
According to Alberta, Shapiro grew frustrated when asked about Harris’ claim that the governor inquired about including Pennsylvania artists in the vice-presidential residence. Alberta also asked Shapiro about Harris writing that Shapiro insisted “that he would want to be in the room for every decision.”
“She wrote that in her book?” he said in response to Harris’ comment on the residence’s art. “That’s complete and utter bulls—.”
“I can tell you that her accounts are just blatant lies,” he added.
Shapiro also defended reports that he also questioned Harris about the role during his vice presidential interview, according to Alberta.
“I did ask a bunch of questions,” Shapiro told Alberta. “Wouldn’t you ask questions if someone was talking to you about forming a partnership and working together?”
Alberta then reported that Shapiro “snapped” when asked if he felt betrayed by Harris, who the governor said did not inform him of what was in the book beforehand.
“I mean, she’s trying to sell books and cover her ass,” Shapiro responded.
He then added: “I shouldn’t say ‘cover her ass.’ I think that’s not appropriate. She’s trying to sell books. Period.”
Shapiro is seen as a likely candidate in the 2028 Democratic presidential primary. He was one of the many contenders interviewed to be Harris’ running mate in the 2024 election, which ultimately became Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D).
An Emerson College poll last month found that no Democrat was heavily favored to become the party’s 2028 presidential nominee. The poll found that 35% of Democratic primary voters were undecided.
Twenty-four percent of Democratic voters chose California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), 10% supported Harris and 9% chose former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez got 2% of the vote. The remaining 19% of Democratic voters chose someone else.
