Dick Van Dyke’s wife, Arlene Silver, claims she is being stalked.
“I did not go to yoga today. There’s someone kind of stalking me around Malibu. I don’t feel comfortable even going out,” Silver, 54, told her Instagram followers in a livestream on Tuesday, December 16, just three days after her legendary husband’s 100th birthday.
In the video, Silver said a man, who she chose not to identify, has been turning up at her yoga classes, adding that “this has been going on for a couple of months” since Halloween.
“I go to yoga for my mental and to my move my body. It sucks because it’s the one hour I leave to do something for myself,” she said. “So, hopefully he’ll go away, or else I’m going to have to have a bodyguard escort me to my yoga class.”
Us Weekly has reached out to Van Dyke’s reps for comment.
Elsewhere in the video, the makeup artist said, “There’s always gotta be someone to mess things up. People are crazy. Dick was like, ‘I’m going to go over there with you.’ I go, ‘Well, that’s probably want he wants, to start with, so I don’t think that’s going to help.’”
Silver said she confronted the alleged stalker the last time she went to yoga, noting that the man has also turned up at various events to mark Van Dyke’s centennial birthday.
“I said something to him yesterday. He acted like, ‘What?’” she recalled. “Dude, you know what you’re doing. How do you relax when you’re in yoga class and this guy could just walk into the class?”
“He was like, ‘I’m just saying hi to you.’ I was like, ‘No, you’re not. Beat it,’” she said later in the video.
“I think I am going to tell the police, because the police are across the street from my yoga,” Silver said. “I’m going to stay in my gated community until I figure out how to handle this.”
“He’s a creep and he’s doing things that are very weird. This behavior is very disturbing. I don’t feel comfortable about it. Neither does Dick,” she added.
Silver said that the situation is frustrating because it is rare that she steps away from caring for Van Dyke.
“My yoga class is the one hour I leave Dick,” she explained. “I don’t have anybody here. I live in Malibu. It’s an isolated place. I’m with Dick by myself a lot. I’m his sole caretaker. This is one hour I go do the yoga and there’s someone at the house [with Dick].”
Van Dyke, best known for his roles in Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, turned 100 on Saturday, December 13.
Silver told People she threw a birthday party for Van Dyke at their Malibu, California, home, where he was surrounded by friends and family.
“It went so perfect — just everything. And he was so happy. His face, I love to make him have that face,” the actor’s wife told People on Sunday, December 14.
“This felt so perfect,” she said, adding that she was “relieved, grateful and so happy” that the occasion went as planned.
In a Monday, December 15, Instagram livestream, Silver said her husband couldn’t sleep the night before as they learned about Rob and Michele Reiner’s deaths.
“Such a weird, wonderful, awful weekend,” Silver said in the video. “I can’t not talk about this horrible thing. Dick’s birthday was so amazing, over-the-top beautiful. I was relieved and happy and all that, and then this happened yesterday.”
