Everything goes wrong for Cowboys in loss as playoff hopes hang on slimmest of margins

The Cowboys are hanging on to their playoff hopes by a wing and a prayer after they fell to the Vikings on Sunday night, in a game where everything that could go wrong did.

Following their 34-26 loss to the Vikings in Arlington, Texas, the Cowboys are looking at a one percent chance at making the postseason, according to ESPN, as they dropped to 6-7-1, and would need a minor miracle in order to pull off winning the NFC East.

Part of that would include the Eagles losing all three of their final games and the Cowboys winning all of their remaining matchups.

Dallas did itself no favors on Sunday night as it only scored two touchdowns and relied on kicker Brandon Aubrey to lead the scoring charge, which worked until it didn’t.

The Cowboys also only converted on 2-of-12 third-down opportunities during the game.

After reaching the Vikings’ 37-yard line, Dak Prescott was sacked on third down and Aubrey missed a go-ahead field goal try from 59 yards out with 3:53 to go in the game.

It was the usually automatic Aubrey’s second field goal miss of the game, the other from 51 yards out in the second quarter.

The Vikings (6-8) scored a touchdown on the ensuing possession in a five-play, 51-yard drive to extend their lead to 31-23 and never looked back.

The Cowboys also lost a key piece of their defense when former Jets star Quinnen Williams had to come out of the game in the second half to be examined for a concussion.

He missed a key series with Dallas still down a score and trying to get the ball back.

Williams, who had an interception in the game, will enter the week in concussion protocol, Cowboys head coach Briaan Shottenheimer told reporters after the game.

Javonte Williams also gave the Cowboys an injury scare when he dealt with a shoulder injury in the first half, though he did return to the game after halftime.

Shottenheimer didn’t express too much concern that the injury would linger into the week.

Prescott, the NFL leader in yards passing coming in, was 23-of-38 for 294 yards but was held without a touchdown pass for just the third time this season.

Williams and Malik Davis each had a 1-yard TD run for Dallas.

Aubrey did help Dallas pull off a nifty fake field goal in the first quarter.
