While Rachael Ray has long been a household name in the realm of homemaking and cooking, she’s often been candid about her own home and marriage life.

Ray has previously revealed that she and her husband John Cusimano sleep in “separate corners.” Though this dynamic may sound unconventional, some fans weighed in, noting that their home operates in a similar manner.

Over the years, Ray has alluded to her marriage, hammering home that she and Cusimano have their quirks, like everyone else.

Separate corners

Ray and Cusimano first wed in 2005. During their nearly two decades of marriage, Ray has created a floor plan that works for her.

In an interview on the I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead podcast that dropped October 2024, Ray revealed that while she is happy in the marriage, a good deal of the happiness is thanks to the fact that she and Cusimano have allowed for adequate space.

“I am wildly, wildly lucky that I have my husband,” said Ray. “But he understands I need my space. He needs his space. John and I largely stay in separate corners.”

Shortly after these comments surfaced, Cusimano made an appearance on Rachael Ray Meals in Minutes, where they made Ray’s famous pesto pasta.

Screaming matches

In that same podcast, Ray admitted that she and Cusimano, like all couples, have their arguments. However, their arguments aren’t always on the quiet side.

“It’s very hard, especially for hot-tempered or creative or vociferous loud people to be able to just calm it down,” Ray said. “John and I don’t calm it down ever. We have huge screaming matches all the time, but I think that’s healthy. I really do. And I don’t trust people that are too quiet.”

They leaned on each other when their home caught on fire

Back in 2020, Ray and Cusimano’s upstate New York home caught on fire. It took a year to rebuild, however, Ray spoke to People in an interview, and said the two got through this hurdle by each other’s sides.

“We have volatile personalities but we’re both very practical. too,” Ray said. “That’s the lawyer side of him and the domestic side of me. We’re like, ‘These are the things that must be accomplished today. And we will get to this only by doing what work is necessary.'”

Their careers work in tandem with each other’s

In a 2020 interview on The Rachael Ray Show‘s website, Cusimano shared how he and Ray met, and revealed how it impacted his career.

“I used to practice in New York City as an entertainment lawyer, primarily in film,” Cusimano said. “Then I met this one [Ray], and now I only have one client and her name is Rachael Ray. So I just work on our businesses all the time.”

Ray added, “Smartest thing I ever did was marry an entertainment lawyer. Saved me a bundle.”
