Observers at U.S. men’s national team camp last month were treated to an unusual sight.

In addition to Mauricio Pochettino and his staff running training sessions, Steve Cherundolo, the U.S. under-23 coach, was involved as well.

Given the youthful composition of the roster that swept through four friendlies, it made plenty of sense that Cherundolo was there. It’s not something that will repeat next week when the U.S. opens camp ahead of its two-leg CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal against Haiti, though.

Cherundolo, who was hired this summer to push the U.S. into contention for gold at the 2028 Olympics, will be holding his own camp in Spain, with his own roster and two fixtures against opponents yet to be announced.
