Nearly two months after its long-awaited second season arrived on FX, Deadline has reported that the cult-favorite sitcom English Teacher has officially been canceled at the network.

Created by and starring comedian Brian Jordan Alvarez, English Teacher followed the exploits of ordinary teacher Evan Marquez as he dealt with daily life in his average high school settings.

Co-starring Stephanie Koenig, Enrico Collantoni, Sean Patton and Carmen Christopher, each season of English Teacher was met with an overwhelmingly positive response from fans and critics alike.

Initially premiering in September 2024, every episode of the series’ second season was later released all at once on FX and its affiliated streaming platform, Hulu.

In addition to its glowing critical response from viewers, the series’ first season also managed to net nominations at the Critics Choice, WGA and Film Independent Spirit Awards.

FX, English Teacher and creator/star Alvarez have all come under a fair amount of scrutiny since the series began late last year. Shortly prior to the show’s premiere, Alvarez’s former colleague, Jon Ebeling, made public sexual assault allegations against the comedian, a controversy that likely impacted English Teacher‘s production following its inaugural season (via Variety).

In response to Ebeling’s claims, a spokesperson for FX released the following statement, “We reviewed the allegations presented to us by another media outlet prior to the show’s launch. Mr. Ebeling never reached out to us with any concerns. We will have no further comment at this time.”

When announcing the series’ renewal for a second season, the network chose not to address Alvarez’s alleged misconduct, stating instead, “English Teacher was one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of 2024 and we are grateful to the producers, writers, cast, directors and crew for the show’s creative excellence. We look forward to the new season.”

FX has yet to release a formal statement explaining the series’ cancelation.
