Lady Vols basketball avenged last season’s loss to Middle Tennessee State with an 89-75 win Tuesday.

Tennessee (3-0) was led by Talaysia Cooper, who logged 18 points on 8-for-16 shooting at Food City Center. She added 10 rebounds, four steals and four assists.

The Lady Vols held MTSU (2-1) to only 4-for-12 shooting from deep, but they got outscored in the paint 44-24. They counted it with their best 3-point shooting night of the season, going 15-for-42 from behind the arc. Samara Spencer and Tess Darby led the team in 3-point shooting, knocking down four each.

Spencer logged 17 points, Darby 14 and Sara Puckett added 13 points. The Lady Vols are off to an undefeated start to Kim Caldwell’s first season at the helm, beating Samford and UT Martin last week.

Lady Vols vs Middle Tennessee predictions

Tennessee 88, Middle Tennessee 51: Middle Tennessee will be the toughest challenge so far for the Lady Vols, especially with 6-foot-7 center Anastasiia Boldyreva. But Grand Canyon just held the Blue Raiders to 57 points in MTSU’s win Friday, so Tennessee should be able to hand business and avenge last season’s loss.

Lady Vols vs Middle Tennessee injury updates

Tennessee will be without two guards to start the season. Senior guard Kaiya Wynn was announced out for the season because of a torn Achilles, and walk-on guard Edie Darby is out for “an extended period of time” because of a left foot injury.
