Arrangements for former Vice President Dick Cheney’s funeral have been set for this week, and millions will tune in to say goodbye to the politician.

The memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET on Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.. The service will also be livestreamed on YouTube.

A Republican stalwart, Cheney (R) was the White House Chief of Staff for President Gerald Ford from 1975 to 1977 and later served as U.S. Representative for Wyoming’s at-large congressional district from 1979 to 1989. He was the 17th U.S. Secretary of Defense from 1989 to 1993, and then served as the country’s 46th Vice President from 2001 to 2009 alongside President George W. Bush.

Chene had long represented a brand of Republican politics that clashed sharply with Trump’s populist approach.

The divide deepened after Cheney and his daughter, former U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, became fierce critics of Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Liz Cheney, who served as vice chair of the House committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, said Trump had “summoned a violent mob” and “caused a constitutional crisis.”

Her father publicly supported her stance, saying in a 2022 campaign ad that “there has never been an individual who was a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump.” He later endorsed Democratic 2024 presidential nominee Kamala Harris

Cheney died at 84 on Nov. 3, 2025, due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, according to a statement from his family.

Washington National Cathedral Dean Rev. Randolph Marshall Hollerith said in the press release that Cheney “devoted decades of his life to public service at the highest levels of government.”

“His life was marked by deep dedication to his family and to the country he served,” Hollerith said. “We pray for his family and all who loved him.”

USA TODAY has reached out to the Cheney family’s spokesperson to find out where the former VP will be buried.
