It’s President Donald Trump’s birthday today, June 14 and no better way to celebrate than a military parade in DC for the Army’s 250th anniversary, with thousands of troops and a massive display of tanks and artillery.

With an estimated cost of $40 million funded by taxpayers, the parade has led protesters to the streets today for “No Kings” protests to decry Trump’s attempts to “feed his ego” with the lavish spectacle, where he will be seated in a viewing stand on Constitution Avenue to take it all in.

The parade is meant to honor the Army’s legacy, although Trump’s military parade dreams have spanned years and the addition of a rare military parade had only been discussed in earnest last month.

Here’s what to know about today’s event, plus how to stream it live.

The latest price tag for the massive event is $30 million, a figure that could rise as high as $45 million, which is funded by taxpayers, which has drawn criticism from lawmakers who believe the money could be spent elsewhere.

The Army has promised to fix any city streets caused by parade damage, including from the massive tanks rolling through, according to USA TODAY. Cleanup costs and police were not part of the estimate.

Who is paying for Trump military parade?

The parade and festivities will be funded by taxpayer dollars, which has drawn criticism from lawmakers who believe the money could be spent elsewhere.

“If it was really about celebrating military families, we could put $30 million toward helping them offset the cost of their child care, food assistance and tuition,” Sen. Tammy Duckworth said on X. “But it isn’t. Trump is throwing himself a $30 million birthday parade just to stroke his own ego.”

Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul said he “wouldn’t have done it,” stating the U.S. was “proud” not to stage military parades like in North Korea and the Soviet Union.

Has the US ever had a military parade?

Military parades are generally rare in the U.S. Both the Marines and the Navy are celebrating their 250th anniversaries this year, although neither are planning parades. Raw displays of military power are common in Russia, China and North Korea to send aggressive political and propagandistic messages to adversaries at home and abroad, according to USA TODAY.

In 1991, tanks and thousands of troops paraded through Washington, D.C. to celebrate the eviction of Saddam Hussein’s army from Kuwait in the Gulf War. The parade, held under then-President George H.W. Bush, was believed to have cost $8 million and drew a crowd of 200,000 people.
