Hilary Duff is not holding back in her new music.
Duff, 38, dropped a sneak peek of her new single, “Roommates,” via social media on Friday, January 9.
“Want the highlights, 10 out of 10 / Butterflies from holding your hand,” she sings. “Before we swept us under the bed / We became practically roommates.”
She adds, “Been touching myself by the front door / ‘Cause you don’t even know my way no more.”
Duff announced on Friday that “Roommates” will be available to stream starting Thursday, January 15, at 7 p.m. ET. It’s presumably one of the tracks from her upcoming album, Luck … Or Something.
“I am often asked how I still have my head on straight after growing up in this industry,” Duff said in a November 2025 press release announcing the new LP. “The album title is my way of answering that question. It’s luck, but there’s also a lot of weight in the ‘ … or something.’ Many of the things I’ve been through along the way are held there, and I feel like ultimately that’s what’s shaped me.”
Luck … Or Something will be Duff’s first new album in 10 years following 2015’s Breathe In. Breathe Out. The album’s debut single, “Mature,” dropped in November 2025.
“It is definitely about a brief experience that I had in my [life] — a long, long time ago,” Duff told Vogue at the time, hinting “Mature” was about one of her past relationships. “It is not totally autobiographical. I took a few artistic liberties just to make the song work structurally, but the gist is the gist.”
She added, “I was looking back on this relationship and thinking about whether this guy had a habit of dating younger women or whether I was ‘special.’ The whole experience was super therapeutic to write about, but being so vulnerable through your music can be really scary.”
Duff wrote “Mature” and most of the album alongside her husband, Matthew Koma.
“‘Mature’ is a conversation with my younger self about being happy with where I landed,” she recalled to the outlet. “Part of it was an idea that Matt originated, and part of it came from thinking about that idea of not recognizing younger versions of yourself when you’re now deep into your 30s. Matt, obviously, knows all the stories from my past, and he’s so great at coming up with a concept where I get to go in and interior design the whole thing.”
Duff has been married to Winnetka Bowling League musician Koma, 38, since 2019. They share three daughters, while Duff is also mom of son Luca from a previous marriage.
“My favorite part about this day is how the people in your life get a chance to give you your flowers, and tell you how insanely much you mean to us,” Koma captioned a September 2025 birthday tribute to his wife. “You make everybody feel like the center of your universe. Your friends, your kids, your family. I don’t know how you’re physically or mentally able to be so present, give so much, and still make time for mahjong, but we’re all the luckiest to be on the receiving end of your love (and calendar coordination).”
He concluded, “Doing real life with you is my happy place, and makes everything outside of it seem simultaneously within the closest of reach and completely unimportant at the same time. Working on your album with you this year, on your terms, framed how it works for you, has been the f***ing best and I can’t wait for the world to hear what it sounds like when you get to speak directly to your people without anything or anyone standing in the way.”
Luck … Or Something will be available Friday, February 20.
