Despite the incredibly heavy toll it imposes on athletes’ bodies, there are no professional wrestling unions in the U.S.—in part, because of Hulk Hogan.
In the mid-1980s, WWE Hall of Famer Jesse “The Body” Ventura attempted to unionize wrestlers to secure benefits like healthcare, retirement, and better wages—despite their classification as independent contractors.
According to Ventura, he confided this plan to Hogan shortly before WrestleMania II in 1986.
Hogan, by his own admission, immediately the informed WWE chairman and CEO Vince McMahon about the proposed union.
McMahon promptly halted the initiative and reportedly sidelined Ventura in retaliation.
“I was on Vince McMahon’s team all the way, so I went to Vince and said, ‘Hey, Jesse’s stirring sh*t up,” Hogan said in the recent Mr. Mahon documentary on Netflix.
Meanwhile, Ventura said he never trusted Hogan again.
