A prominent Minnesota Democrat is breaking ranks with his party over Rep. Ilhan Omar â declaring allegations that she married her brother are âalmost certainly trueâ and warning that questions about her finances arenât going away, either.
Joe Randinovich, a former Minnesota state representative and well-connected Democratic operative, delivered the assessment in a series of posts on X Thursday, challenging the congresswomanâs longstanding denials and the partyâs efforts to dismiss the allegations as a right-wing conspiracy.
âDemocrats should understand that the allegation is almost certainly true â whatever conclusions they draw from that point could vary â and her denials calling it a right-wing, Islamophobic or racist conspiracy are almost certainly not,â Radinovich wrote.
The comments come as federal investigators continue to look into Omarâs immigration history and finances, with the Minnesota Democrat suggesting his party should stop reflexively defending the embattled congresswoman.
âAnd then Iâd very, very careful about how I qualified on allegations around her finances â where her defense looks similar and where no meaningful questions have been answered publicly, and where any objective look at the evidence doesnât lookâ¦great,â he added.
Radinovichâs comments quickly sparked confrontation with Briana Rose Lee, a Minneapolis Democratic activist who previously worked in Omarâs campaign operation.
âJoe. You arenât stupid. You know this is a baseless and manufactured witch hunt. Iâm actually surprised to see this from you,â Lee wrote. âItâs a new low.â
However, Randinovich didnât back down.
âYouâre right. Iâm not stupid,â he responded, acknowledging that he has little confidence in President Trumpâs Justice Department, and questioning the timing of the federal raid on Omarâs Washington DC residence.
Here’s the latest on the ongoing immigration investigation of Rep. Ilhan Omar
âThough itâs pretty notable that a DC judge signed off on it,â he added, before declaring that heâs âpretty confident this specific allegation is true.â
In a separate post, Radinovich doubled down on his stance, arguing that anyone who believes Omarâs denials must be ignoring a growing body of evidence.
âVibes is what it would take to believe her at this point,â he wrote. âThereâs plenty of evidence and sourcing available if you donât dismiss it out of hand.â
The public break is particularly notable, due to Radinovichâs ties to the Minnesota Democratic establishment.
Radinovich served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2013 to 2015, managed Democrat Rick Nolanâs 2016 congressional campaign and ran Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Freyâs successful 2017 campaign. He later served as Freyâs chief of staff.
Ilhan Omar’s relative timeline
Significant dates into Rep. Ilhan Omar’s past relationships, which point to a potential sham marriage with her brother.
- 1981 or 1982 â Ilhan Omar is born in Mogadishu, Somalia. Her birth year is in dispute â there are allegations she made herself a year younger to later qualify for citizenship as a minor.Â
- 1995 â After four years in a refugee camp in Kenya because of the Somalian civil war, Omar and her family emigrate to the US.Â
- 2002 â Omar marries Ahmed Hirsi (right) in an Islamic ceremony. They applied for a marriage license, but, she said, âwe never finalized the application and thus were never legally married.â They have two children.
- 2009 â Omar marries Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Evidence points to Elmi being her brother, and that she married him so he could legally live in the US after the family wanted him out of the UK.Â
- 2012 â Omar still lived with Hirsi during this time, witnesses told the Post, and they had a third child this year. Elmi also reportedly leaves Minnesota this year.Â
- 2016 â The FBI and Department of Homeland Security investigate claims Omar married her brother, as she runs for Minnesotaâs legislature.Â
- 2017 â Omarâs divorce from Elmi is finalized.Â
- 2018 â Omar officially marries Hirsi. She runs for Congress for the first time and wins.Â
- 2019 â Omar leaves Hirsi for Tim Mynett (left), a political consultant who is paid by her campaign. They marry the next year.Â
- 2021 â A Biden-appointed US Attorney in Minnesota officially shuts down the investigation into Omarâs alleged immigration fraud.Â
He also played a role in two unsuccessful Democratic primary challenges against Omar, working with Don Samuels in 2022 and 2024.
Omar, who represents Minnesotaâs heavily Democratic 5th Congressional District, has repeatedly denied allegations that she married her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, in 2009 as part of an alleged immigration fraud scheme.Â
The controversy has surrounded the congresswoman for nearly a decade, but has resurfaced amid new federal scrutiny over her immigration history.
Homeland Security Investigation agents raided Omarâs Washington D.C. home on Oct. 12, seizing her passport, phone and computer.
Federal investigators are examining whether Omar or her late father, Nur Mohamed, fraudulently provided information on citizenship paperwork decades ago. The investigation could potentially have consequences for her citizenship status.
During former President Barack Obamaâs administration, feds opened an investigation into the alleged marriage scheme in 2016. The probe was open until 2021, but was closed by the Biden administration.
No criminal charges have been filed against Omar over the allegations, and her office continues to dismiss the claims as “politically motivated smears.â
Omarâs campaign responded to Radinovichâs claims to Fox News Digital on Friday.
âJoe is a deeply troubled individual whose demons have sadly manifested as an irrational obsession with Congresswoman Omar after managing two losing campaigns against her,â the campaign said to the outlet.
âHis claims are false, biased, and without any evidence. While he was once seen as a rising star within the party, Joe is now widely recognized as a shill for Republican and Corporate money.â
