DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – The Democratic Caucus in the Iowa House Democrats chose State Representative Brian Meyer, a former legislative staffer and attorney, to serve as minority leader.
This follows State Representative Jennifer Konfrst stepping down from leadership and announcing her run for Iowa’s 3rd congressional district.
Meyer, a Dubuque native and Des Moines representative, had this to say about his new position:
“We are going to be focusing on some of the smaller communities where we’ve lost seats in the last couple of years,” he said. ”The Marshalltowns of the world, the Newtons of the world. The smaller industrial towns, and I think we are going to have a message that’s going to resonate with people like that.”
Meyer will take the mantle of minority leader after the session ends, but this year, lawmakers have had an extended stay in Des Moines.
There are hold-ups in both the Iowa House and Senate, with lawmakers threatening to hold out on approving next year’s state budget.
On Thursday, Republican House and Senate leaders reached an agreement on the budget, including money to raise pay for para-educators.
It’s not yet clear if the budget has the support to pass.
