DES MOINES, Iowa — GOP State Rep. Matt Windschitl wants to represent Iowa’s 4th Congressional District, which is by far the most conservative.
Republican Congressman Randy Feenstra currently represents the area, has filed to run for governor. While he hasn’t officially announced, he’s already garnering endorsements and running TV ads.
“I want to go to DC to represent the people of Iowa four and look at every piece of legislation under the lens of how does this make Iowans more free,” Windschitl said. “How does this make Americans more free.”Windschitl is from Missouri valley and was first elected to the iowa capitol in 2006 where he’s serving his tenth term.
He said many Iowans encouraged him to take the next step, representing them in Congress.
“You can see the things that I’ve lead on whether it be pro-2A (2nd amendment), pro-life, pro-AG, pro-business, lowering taxes, getting government out of the way,” Windschitl said. “All of those things, I think those things are what is going to help me when I get out to DC.”
Windschitl is currently serving as the House Majority Leader, the second highest ranking member in the House.
“There are plenty of great people within my own House Republican caucus and the statehouse right now that I know can do a very good job serving in the role that I currently serve in as majority leader,” Windschitl said.
Windschitl plans to step down as majority leader next session but will continue to serve out his term. A new majority leader would need to be elected and State Rep. Bobby Kaufmann said he wants the position.
It is something President Donald Trump hinted at during his stop at the Iowa State Fair last week.
“Iowa House Majority Leader-elect Bobby Kaufmann, thank you Bobby,” Trump said. “Great future.”
GOP State Senator Lynn Evans had launched an exploratory committee for a possible run in Iowa’s 4th district. However, he announced he’ll be seeking reelection to the Iowa Senate instead.
