Jane Fonda Says Rob Reiner and Wife Michele Looked ‘Happy’ on Final Night Before Their Deaths

Jane Fonda is sharing insight into Rob Reiner and wife Michele Singer Reiner’s moods the night before their shocking deaths.

“Rob and Michele Reiner were wonderful, caring, smart, funny, generous people, always coming up with ideas for how to make the world better, kinder,” Fonda, 87, wrote via Instagram on Monday, December 15.

Fonda was working with Rob and Michele on relaunching the Committee for the First Amendment — a group that champions freedom of expression from government censorship — before news broke on Sunday, December 14, that the the couple were killed in their Los Angeles home.

“I saw them night before last looking healthy and happy,” she shared. “I am reeling with grief. Stunned.”

Rob and Michele notably attended Conan O’Brien‘s Christmas party on Saturday, December 13, with their son Nick Reiner. A source exclusively told Us Weekly that Nick, 32, allegedly acted “creepily” at the celebration and asked people “if they were famous” before leaving. His parents were subsequently found dead at ages 78 and 68, respectively, from “apparent stab wounds,” per police.

Nick was arrested in connection to the crime and is currently being held without bail.

As more details emerge about Rob and Michele’s tragic deaths, celebrities have spoken out about their final moments with the couple.

Comedian Eric Idle revealed he spoke to Rob for “over an hour” shortly before his death.

“Rob Reiner was a lovely man,” Idle, 82, wrote via X on Sunday. “I spoke to him last night for over an hour.”

Idle recalled how he “always enjoyed” Reiner’s company. “I met him at his Dad’s in 1975. He was telling me about [filming] at Stonehenge and his thoughts for the future,” Idle wrote. “This is so awful. I shall miss him. A clever, talented and very thoughtful man. So awful.”

Michelle Obama, meanwhile, revealed she and her husband, Barack Obama, had plans to see Rob and Michele the day they were killed.

“We’ve known them for many, many years, and we were supposed to be seeing them that night — last night — and we got the news,” Michelle, 61, said during an appearance on the Monday episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Michelle seemed to call out President Donald Trump, who mocked Rob’s death earlier that day while describing the late director as a “deranged person” who had “Trump derangement syndrome.” (Rob was openly critical of the Trump administration.)

“And let me just say this: Unlike some people, Rob and Michele Reiner are some of the most decent, courageous people,” Michelle said on Monday. “They are not deranged or crazed. What they have always been are passionate people. In a time when there’s not a lot of courage going on, they were the kind of people who were ready to put their actions behind what they cared about. And they cared about their family, and they cared about this country, and they cared about fairness and equity, and that is the truth. I do know them.”
