No. 16 Tennessee (19-6, 6-6 SEC) improved to .500 percent in Southeastern Conference play on Sunday. The Lady Vols defeated Ole Miss (17-8, 8-5 SEC), 80-71, at Food City Center. Rankings reflect the USA TODAY Sports women’s basketball coaches poll.
Fifth-year Tennessee guard Jewel Spear led all scorers with 28 points. She converted 9-of-11 field goal attempts, 5-of-7 three-point attempts and 5-of-6 free throw attempts. Spear also recorded one rebound and one assist in 28 minutes.
Zee Spearman (14), Samara Spencer (13) and Talaysia Cooper (11) scored 10-plus points for the Lady Vols.
Spencer led Tennessee in rebounds (10) and assists (6). Cooper tied Spencer with six assists in the contest.
The Lady Vols totaled 22 bench points, 44 points in the paint, 24 points off turnovers, six second-chance points and 18 fast break points. Ole Miss out-rebounded Tennessee, 40-33.
Tennessee will next play on Thursday against Alabama at Food City Center. Tipoff between the Lady Vols and Crimson Tide is slated for 6:30 p.m. EST and can be watched on SEC Network+.
