Kevin Stefanski explains ‘miscommunication’ in Shedeur Sanders wristband controversy

Things are looking about as dysfunctional as ever in Cleveland.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski gave rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders the wrong wristband to start the game, leading to major in-game issues in a resounding 31-3 loss to the Bears.

Cleveland had too many men on the field on the second play of the game, an opening drive false start and a second drive delay of game while Sanders had to run to the sideline to get a play call from Stefanski.

The Browns had no first downs in the first quarter and were almost immediately in a 14-0 deficit.

The game broadcast and sideline reporter Allison Williams revealed that Sanders needed a new wristband to open the second quarter.

After the game, Stefanski confirmed the wristband issues.

“Yeah, there was a miscommunication early,” Stefanski said postgame. “I don’t know that the… ah… the wristband got something on it or whatever it was.”

Sanders didn’t throw his coach under the bus postgame but did shed a bit more light on the bizarre circumstances.

“The card just fell out. It just fell out on the sideline,” Sanders said postgame. “That was it.”

Sanders ended the game 18-for-35 for 177 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions as the Browns fell to 3-11.

Sanders was named starter for the rest of the year after throwing for 364 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s 31-29 loss to the Titans.

“I’ve still got the same belief in myself,” Sanders added. “It is like it is every week. You’ve got to get out there, learn from it and play better. That’s it.”

The Browns now face a tough matchup with the Bills next week.
