KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – More voters showed up at Knox County polling locations for the 2024 presidential election than any other in history, according to Chris Davis with the county’s election commission.

The Nov. 5 election saw a total turnout of 224,521 votes, around 71% of which were cast in-person. It broke the previous record — set in 2020 — by 2,493 votes.

The news is similar for Knox County’s early voting numbers, which also set a record (163,256) by more than 10,000 voters.

Davis also provided other statistics about voter turnout, saying 38,766 people cast a ballot for the first time.

What isn’t surprising is how voting broke down by age group. By far, the largest turnout was among older voters, 55 years old and up.

When it comes to gender breakdown, the data is a little murkier. Federal regulations don’t require voters to provide a gender, so a large number of poll-goers in the county were recorded as “unknown.” That being said, the majority of recorded voters were women.

In total, Knox County saw a 70.55% voter turnout rate.
