Yankees fans, rejoice.
On Wednesday, Gerrit Cole and Max Fried took a turn together in the Yankees rotation for the first time ever — following Cole’s recovery from last year’s Tommy John surgery and Fried’s recent stint on the sidelines due to a bone bruise in his throwing elbow — by starting the two ends of a day-night doubleheader split against the Pirates.
Suddenly, the team’s recent woes didn’t seem all that important.
Cole struck out 11 over seven innings and allowed three earned runs in an eventual 5-3 loss in 10 innings in the matinee, a contest marked by a José Caballero pitch-clock violation and blowup.
