A leading authority on Indian cooking, Maya Kaimal is an award-winning cookbook author. She is also the founder and creative culinary force behind the eponymous premium South Indian food brand Maya Kaimal Foods, which she launched from a Brooklyn apartment with her husband in 2003. Kaimal has published two books — Curried Favors (1996) and Savoring the Spice Coast of India (2000) — contributed to Food & Wine and Epicurious, and has appeared on the Today Show, the Food Network, Martha Stewart, and the Splendid Table.

Experience

Boston-born Maya Kaimal always had a passion for food and the culinary arts — watching Julia Child’s The French Chef as a child, developing an appreciation for spice and taste during trips to her father’s home in Kerala, and learning to cook with her Aunty Kamala. After college, she landed a job as a photography editor at Saveur where she worked for 15 years. She launched her food company with three fresh sauces, meticulously developed and tested, distributed to NYC specialty stores like Gourmet Garage and Zabar’s. Her brand has since expanded to include a wide range of products, including shelf-stable sauces, soups, condiments, chana, dal, marinades, and rice, sold at national retailers like Whole Foods and Target.

Education

Maya Kaimal graduated from Pomona College with a Fine Arts degree in photography.
