PORT ST. LUCIE — The Mets added a new position to their coaching staff this winter, hiring Desi Druschel as the team’s assistant pitching coach. Druschel was previously in the same job for the Yankees, where he gained familiarity with Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, a former bench coach in the Bronx.

Druschel, 49, has an extensive collegiate coaching background, which he credits for his understanding of the technology used to help improve pitchers. Druschel, who is working under pitching coach Jeremy Hefner, spoke to Post Sports+ this week about his new job and what he hopes to accomplish with the Mets.

NYP: Who was the person most responsible for getting you to the Mets?

DD: I have got several contacts here. Obviously, Mendy as someone I worked with, and Eric Jagers, who is the director of pitching development, I coached him in college [at Iowa]. I know [bullpen coach] José Rosado from the Yankees. I have got several people I know over here, so I don’t know that there is necessarily one person.
