It’s primary election day in Michigan, when voters determine their party’s candidate to run in the Nov. 5 general election in various national, state and local races.
Although the presidential primary to select Michigan’s candidates in that race was in February, the Tuesday, Aug. 6 election is still important for the state’s U.S. Senate and House seats at a national level.
Polls opened at 7 a.m. today and closed at 8 p.m. Voters have the right to cast a ballot if they are in line at a polling place by 8 p.m., but results will start to flow in soon after.

U.S. Senate
In the U.S. Senate, Democrat Debbie Stabenow’s retirement after 20 years has opened up the seat for somebody new.
U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin and actor Hill Harper are competing for the Democratic Party’s nomination.
On the Republican side, former U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers and Dr. Sherry O’Donnell are vying for the Republican nomination.
U.S. House races
All 13 seats for the U.S. House of Representatives are open, though four Democratic races and five Republican races are uncontested.

Also up for reelection this year are the 110 seats in the Michigan State House of Representatives. The same tool exists for those races, below.
