Former Vice President Mike Pence on Monday celebrated Congress’ certification of the results of the 2024 presidential election, and praised Vice President Kamala Harris for certifying an election that she lost.

Congress certified the election results in a joint session earlier Monday without objection. The process includes the review of each state’s electoral slates and an affirmation of their authenticity. The certification formalized President-elect Donald Trump’s win in November, where he claimed 312 electoral votes to Harris’s 226.

Pence, who had to be evacuated from the Capitol four years ago when rioters stormed the building to stop the certification, welcomed “the return of order and civility” to the proceedings and praised Congress and Harris for fulfilling their Constitutional obligation in certifying the results.

“The peaceful transfer of power is the hallmark of our democracy and today, members of both parties in the House and Senate along with the vice president certified the election of our new president and vice president without controversy or objection,” Pence posted on X.

“I … commend the members of the House, Senate and the Vice President who did their duty under the Constitution of the United States, it being particularly admirable that Vice President Harris would preside over the certification of a presidential election that she lost,” he added.

The former vice president, who served during Trump’s first term, has defended his decision to certify the results of the 2020 election, maintaining that he did not have the authority to reject them. Pence’s decision damaged his relationship with the incoming president, and former Ohio Sen. JD Vance was selected as running mate for Trump’s second term.
