For most of this year, Abbie Stockard belongs to the entire country. As the new Miss America, she’s an ambassador of goodwill, an advocate for women’s empowerment and a symbol of beauty and intelligence.
Stockard, 22, a Birmingham native, was crowned on Jan. 5, 2025, after competing as Miss Alabama. Her reign as Miss America has been a busy one, as she travels to meet the public in cities far and wide.
But when all is said and done — when the tiara comes off and the sash gets stashed — Stockard is an Alabama girl at heart.
It’s the place where she was born and raised. The place where she discovered her passion for nursing. It’s also where Stockard learned to be a successful pageant queen, winning local and state competitions.
This week, Miss America will return to her roots, attending several events in her honor in Birmingham and Auburn. Stockard’s homecoming celebration comes courtesy of the Miss Alabama Organization, and includes three public events in metro Birmingham on Saturday, Feb. 22.

Stockard’s agenda also includes appearances on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 19-20, at Auburn University. She’s in the nursing program at Auburn and a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. Stockard spent three years as a member of the Tiger Paws dance team.
She’ll be at Neville Arena on Wednesday, dancing with the Tiger Paws when the Auburn men’s basketball team faces the Arkansas Razorbacks. Stockard plans to reunite with fellow nursing students and sorority sisters, as well.
During a recent phone interview, AL.com asked Stockard to share her thoughts on the homecoming celebration, discuss her first few weeks as Miss America and more. Here’s what she said.
Abbie, you’ll be back in Alabama soon for events celebrating your win as Miss America. How are you feeling as the dates get closer?
Abbie Stockard: I could not be more excited. I’m counting down the days until I get to be reunited with my family, my friends — pretty much almost all 51 of the other amazing young women I competed against at Miss America. I’m super excited. I mean, in the past four weeks since being crowned Miss America, I have felt just an outpouring amount of love and support from my community, but also everyone across Alabama.
I truly do feel so cherished and so celebrated, and I just can’t wait to see everybody in person and spend some intentional and quality time together. I’ve been talking to all of the contestants that are coming, and they’re just so excited. I can’t wait to show them the place that I call home, which is Birmingham, Alabama, because a lot of them have never been here before.
It’ll just be fun, getting to not just celebrate me, but celebrate them as well. Competing at Miss America is no small accomplishment, and we all got to experience it and go through it together. So celebrating them and getting to spend time together outside of a competition environment will be really fun.

Your schedule as Miss America has been packed, or so it seems. Have you been able to spend much time at home since you were crowned?
I have been super busy this past month, but I am very, very fortunate that I have been able to spend some time at home with my family. I wasn’t really sure what the year was going to look like when I got crowned. I thought I’d constantly be traveling. So although I have been traveling, I’ve had little windows, about two to three days, where I’ve gotten to come home and be with my family.
I think it’s made the transition to Miss America a little more easy, knowing that I’m on the road, I’m doing all these things by myself, but then I get to come home and have some time to reset with my family.
You also have a dog, right? We’ve seen a cute little pooch in photos with you, when you came home about a week after your win.
Oh, my gosh. Yes, that’s my dog. Her name is Waffle. She’s my best friend. You probably saw her, you know, when I came home to Birmingham the very first time. I made my mom bring her (to the airport). … I think I almost started crying; I was so excited.
Tell us more about Waffle. How old is she and what kind of dog?
She’s 4. We actually made up her breed. She’s a Pekiyorkipoo, so Pekingese, Yorkie and poodle all mixed into one. And the cutest thing was her groomer actually got a personalized crown, sash and collar that has little studs on it. And it says, “My mom is Miss America.” So she’s Miss America’s dog.
What’s it been like to step away from the title of Miss Alabama and put on a national crown?
I mean, it’s a huge honor, and I’m just so, so, so blessed and grateful for the opportunity. Going into Miss America, I had really no intention of walking away with the title of Miss America. It’s not that I didn’t think I could accomplish it. It’s just you never know how those things are going to go. At the end of the day, a lot of it is completely out of your control. All you can do is prepare on the front end, and that’s exactly what I had done.
I really just wanted to make my family, my friends, Miss Alabama board and the state of Alabama proud. And I just wanted to represent the state well. And now it’s so cool, knowing that I not only get to continue representing Alabama, but I get to represent the entire nation.
I am the fourth Miss Alabama to walk away with the title of Miss America. And that’s just truly surreal to me because, I look at women like Heather Whitestone and Deidre Downs that were previously Miss Alabama and now Miss America. I mean, they were my everything, especially as a little kid growing up. It’s just so crazy knowing I am now that role model, and I’m that idol to so many other young girls — not just in Alabama, but across the nation.

Is there anything you’ll miss about being Miss Alabama?
I was going to say I would miss doing a bunch of my appearances in Alabama. But I actually have a good bit of appearances scheduled in Alabama that I get to attend as Miss America.
I know I’m attending the Center Point mayor’s prayer breakfast in about two weeks. I’m speaking at a women’s brunch in Dothan. I’m dancing at an Auburn game as Miss America to kick off homecoming weekend. So I really will be doing a lot of appearances, and now I just get to spend time in Alabama as Miss America.
I’m very, very close with the Miss Alabama board. Now that I’m Miss America, I have a new set of people. But (members of the Miss Alabama board) are forever going to be a part of my family because they have just sacrificed so much for me to be successful, and they’ve done so much for this program, and they’ve changed the lives of so many young women. I just know our relationship is going to continue to stay strong, even though I’m not in Alabama as much.

You’ve been traveling a lot as Miss America, going to events in New York, New Orleans, Daytona, Salt Lake City, Washington, D.C., and more. Has it been a whirlwind?
This organization has already opened up so many doors and given me so many incredible opportunities that I never thought I would be able to do. I don’t think it’s really hit me until last week that I am not just Miss Alabama anymore and doing stuff in Alabama. I am traveling across the entire nation seeing things, experiencing things that I’ve never done.
I’ve been to New Orleans last weekend for the Super Bowl. I went to Utah and did a little dance performance with the Jazz dancers. I have been to New York City multiple times. Got to go on (“GMA3″), got to attend the American Heart Association Go Red for Women Red Dress Collection concert, and be up there with famous actors such as Sharon Stone, who gave the (Miss America) organization a shout-out. I never thought that would happen.
I had the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C., and attend several events there for the inauguration. Just so many incredible experiences that I would have never thought possible, unless I had won this title or started competing in this organization.
And then, you know, my (philanthropic) platform is cystic fibrosis. I had always wanted to get in touch with the CEO of the foundation, but I never knew how to or really had the resources. I had only formulated these relationships with people on the state CF foundation of Alabama. And I’ve actually had several phone calls now with the president of the national Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which is super surreal.
At the end of this month, they’ve helped make it possible to where I get to go to Beaver Creek, Colorado, and attend one of their largest fundraising events called Celebrity Ski. So I am so excited for that.

Sharon Stone mentioned your cystic fibrosis initiative on stage at the Go Red for Women concert, didn’t she?
Yes, she did. It was just so kind that she did all of that. I mean, she did not have to say anything about the (Miss America) organization and the fact that she took time to talk about the scholarship money. But she also talked about my platform. It’s a platform that not a lot of people know much about, and so just getting that visibility out there, I was very, very appreciative.
You’ve been doing lots of fashion shoots in evening gowns, dresses, athletic wear and more. Has it been a fashion whirlwind, too?
Just a little bit. I mean, I love it because I don’t have to do a lot of work. People pick out the outfits for me, and I just put them on and get to show them off.
A great example is that Red Dress concert. I was wearing a fabulous red gown that I got to walk in on a runway. And it was the longest train that I have ever had to walk in. So I was freaking out a little bit. But we made it work. I mean, it turned out just so beautiful.
Then of course, for Rebel Athletic, just trying on all of their outfits, I was pretty used to that because I was on the dance team at Auburn, and in high school. So I’m used to modeling and working and showing off those cute dance outfits. It’s just been so cool having those opportunities, because I really enjoy doing that kind of stuff. Miss America has just made it so easy to get me involved in so many different areas.

In your public appearances as Miss America, you look relaxed, calm and cool. Do you always feel that way? Have you ever gotten worried or flustered?
Thank you. Well, I’m definitely a perfectionist. Also, I’m a little bit of a worrywart. That is one of my weaknesses. So of course I’m going to worry, usually about things that are completely out of my control, but that’s just part of my nature.
I have been pretty calm, which is usually not like me. I think being Miss Alabama really, really prepared me to step into the role of Miss America. A lot of this job is being flexible but also being adaptable, because things are constantly changing.
You just have to be able to go with the flow, and you have to look professional. You can’t look flustered by it. So I’ve just been prepared to expect those type of things. But I think everything’s gone really smoothly.
Another reason I’m just super calm is because I’m very strong in my faith. I had a couple of moments, right after I won, like, “Lord, like, am I good enough for this? What if I’m not qualified enough? What if I don’t meet people’s expectations?” You know, just creating a sense of fear. And there is no place for fear.
I’ve had so many little God moments these past four weeks. Just little, like, God winks, I call them, where the Lord has made it just so evident and so clear to me that this is exactly where I’m supposed to be.
It’s so much more than just wearing a pretty crown, and I’ve gone into everything with that mindset. Yes, I can worry about all these things, but at the end of the day, what really matters is how Miss America is making people feel. Using this as an opportunity to invest in those around me, really be intentional with the people that I’m talking to … and when I have that mindset, I just have this unexplainable sense of calm. That’s what I’m trying to embody everywhere I go.
What kinds of things are people asking you when you do meet-and-greets? What do people want to know?
I get asked a lot: “Are you the actual Miss America?” Which is funny, because one day (I joked) that I’m going to say, “No. I’m just into cosplay.” … A lot of people ask about my platform, which makes me happy. A lot of people are aware that we do a service initiative at Miss America. So it’s fun talking about (my awareness campaign) for cystic fibrosis.
I get asked how the crown stays on my head, especially when I danced with the Utah Jazz dancers. Just stuff like that. “Where are you traveling to next? Where are you from? Where did you go to college? What are you studying?”
I like when people ask me those questions because I get to break a lot of pageant stereotypes. I think some people think it’s just dumb pageant girls. And I can be like, “Actually, I’ve acquired over $89,000 in tuition scholarships. I’m graduating completely debt free from Auburn University. Next year I’ll be graduating with my bachelor of science in nursing. And then that’ll pave the way to obtaining my doctor in nursing anesthesia practice.” And then, of course, they’re, like, “Whoa.”
Is the answer to how the crown stays on “bobby pins”?
Yeah, it’s bobby pins. Good placement and bobby pins.
When you dance with the Tiger Paws on Wednesday, will you wear your crown?
Well, this dance is a little complicated. I genuinely don’t think the crown would stay on. I’m going to be spinning, and there’s just no way. But I’m going to put it on after, when I get announced (at the game).
Are you glad to get back to the Plains, even for a couple of days?
Oh, I’m so excited. I’m counting down the days until I get to go to Auburn. I haven’t been to Auburn since football season, I think. You know, it would have been my senior year this year, so all of my friends are still there, all of the people who were supposed to be my roommates are there. And so I cannot wait to go see them.
But also, dance was my first passion, and Auburn is currently No. 1 in the nation. Of course it’s the year that I’m not there, but I’m so excited to go also be reunited with my Tiger Paws and get to experience dancing with them.
Last year when I danced at my last basketball game, I had no clue it was going to be my last, because I hadn’t won the title of Miss Alabama (or Miss America) yet. I think it’ll be fun getting to experience that, and just kind of close the door on that chapter of getting to dance with the team.
You’ll be in Birmingham after that, for events on Friday and Saturday. Is there one event here you’re really looking forward to?
They’re all great. They’re all going to be so much fun. But I’m most excited for the Wright Center show that is taking place on Saturday, Feb. 22. It’s 8 p.m. at Samford University, at the Wright Center where Miss Alabama is held.
I will be performing, but also the top 11 at Miss America are all coming. They’re going to be performing, as well as some of the past Miss Alabamas.
It’s going to be so much fun, because all of the current Miss Alabama contestants that are competing for the title this summer, we’re all doing a cute little opening number to kick off the show. I’m also going to be speaking, sharing a little bit more about my experience as Miss America so far. It should be an absolute blast.
Anything else you’d like to tell people about the homecoming events in Alabama?
Get your phone ready. I’d love to meet you. I’d love to take a picture, and will be so happy to see you.
