A new WalletHub study shows Mississippi is one of the least charitable states in the U.S. Is the Magnolia State full of Scrooges?

Mississippi does have a high poverty rate, but the study looked at 17 different factors, including volunteer rates, the share of sheltered homeless people and the share of income donated.

“The most charitable states aren’t just the places where people give the largest raw amounts of money. The share of the population contributing and the percentage of their individual incomes they’re willing to use to help others are big factors in showing how charitable people are. In addition, many people can’t afford to give much money, especially due to the influence of inflation, but they generously donate their time, which is just as important,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo.

The World Giving Index ranks the United States as the sixth most generous nation in the world. Indonesia ranks No. 1.

In 2024, U.S. donors reportedly gave $592.5 billion to charity, according to Giving USA, and information from the Census and AmeriCorps last year showed about 75.7 million ages 16 and older formally volunteered from September 2022 to September 2023.

WalletHub noted that blue states are significantly more generous than red states, according to its data.
