The relationship between Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and the Biden family is so strained that the outgoing president and his wife did not check in on her after she broke her hip last month, enraging Pelosi’s family.

The revelation in a Sunday Politico report reflects the ongoing feud between Joe Biden and Pelosi after she worked last summer to push him to drop out of the presidential election. Biden eventually withdrew, but it was not without some pointed anger at the former speaker. “We were friends for 50 years,” Jill Biden told The Washington Post in a story published last week. “It was disappointing.”

Pelosi’s family responded publicly in Politico: Grow up.

“If I was Lady McBiden, I’d put on my big girl pants, play the long game and think about my husband’s legacy,” filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi, Nancy Pelosi’s daughter, said. “There aren’t that many people left in America who have something nice to say about Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi is one of them.”

Indeed, Pelosi has publicly praised Biden for months after he dropped out of the 2024 race—even as he refused to grant her a conversation since the summer. In her statement after he made his announcement, she called him a “patriotic American who has always put our country first” and “one of the most consequential Presidents in American history.” “God blessed America with Joe Biden’s greatness and goodness,” she wrote.

But in the months since, Biden and his allies have refused to speak to Pelosi. The rift was so apparent to Pelosi and her team that they wondered whether she’d get easy access to a U.S. military plane to take her to a hospital after the Luxembourg fall “because we have this wall at the White House,” according to Politico. A source told the outlet the White House was eventually responsive.

Pelosi was further frustrated by Biden’s resentment because, according to Politico, her only direct plea to Biden about his electoral chances was by simply showing him polling that indicated he—and Democrats—could face a historic walloping should he remain in the race. “She just told him the truth — he was losing in every poll, and people had lost confidence,” a source told the outlet.

It’s unclear whether the two will mend their relationship. The former speaker has publicly questioned whether Biden should have dropped out sooner than his late-July exit, and the only meeting the two have had since the summer was a brief exchange at a White House holiday party, according to Politico. But Pelosi is adamant their relationship can be fixed.

“I hope so,” she told The New Yorker last year. “I pray so. I cry so.”
