MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace on Tuesday spotlighted what she sees as one of the biggest deceptions in modern presidential politics, which is Donald Trump’s broken promise on lowering grocery prices.

“I don’t know that there’s a greater betrayal in modern presidential politics than Donald Trump saying literally until Election Day, ‘I’m going to make the grocery less expensive on Day 1,’ and then getting into the transition and saying, ‘No, it’s actually going to go up,’” Wallace said.

Matthew Dowd, a former GOP strategist for George W. Bush’s 2004 campaign, agreed, calling it “the fundamental problem that Donald Trump faces right now, politically.”

Trump and the White House don’t seem to grasp, Dowd argued, that he won the 2024 presidential election thanks to the 10% to 15% of voters who overlooked concerns about his integrity because they believed he’d improve the economy and reduce inflation.

But those voters — and business leaders — forgot one key thing, Dowd said.

And that is that the Trump administration is like a pirate ship. Even those who signed on hoping to benefit or be protected from harm are still aboard a pirate ship, and the top pirate — Trump — will eventually turn on them, Dowd added.

“I love that. I love that,” Wallace said of Dowd’s analogy. “Cue the memes of Trump as a pirate.”
