Oliver Hudson is well aware that he grew up in a house of Hollywood royalty — but his kids are somewhat oblivious to their grandmother’s influence on the entertainment industry.
“She definitely has an influence on my kids, like, whether they know it or not, you know what I mean?” Hudson, 49, exclusively told Us Weekly of his legendary mom, Goldie Hawn, while attending the Make-A-Wish Foundation Gala at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Beverly Hills on Friday, December 5.
According to Hudson, his children Wilder, Bodhi and Rio, whom he shares with wife Erinn Bartlett, know who “Goldie Hawn” is, but that doesn’t mean they fully understand how the rest of the world perceives their grandmother.
“They don’t see her that way,” he explained. “They see her as ‘Go Go’ — as grandma. We call her ‘Go Go,’ [that’s] mom, and ‘Go Gee’ is Kurt [Russell]. So yes, they see her [and him] as Go Go and Go Gee but they understand most of it.”
He continued, “I’m not sure they understand how iconic she really is and how she defined a generation for women. They will though, in time. They’re gonna learn.”
If Hudson has it his way, his children are likely to learn about their grandmother’s icon status sooner rather than later — before presenting his mother with an award at the Gala, Hudson revealed to Us that he “wants to do a documentary” about Hawn’s “fascinating” life.
“You know, my mom has been my therapist before I had a therapist,” he told Us. “She’s been my sounding board forever and ever. I mean, she’s the wisest woman that I know. She’s been through it all herself. You know, her story is amazing.”
He added, “I want to do a documentary on her life because it’s truly fascinating — the independence, how she came up dancing in go go cages, living in New York City by herself and teaching kids to dance. I mean, she’s been through it, and so she’s the person to go to when you have any sort of question or inkling of, ‘How do I do this?’ or, ‘How do I do that?’”
Hudson grew up in a blended family after his mom reconnected with fellow actor Russel on the set of 1983’s Swing Shift. Hawn shares daughter Kate Hudson and son Oliver with ex-husband Bill Hudson. Russel, for his part, is dad to son Boston Russel, whom he shares with ex-wife Season Hubley. Whale Hawn and Kurt have famously decided to avoid walking down the wedding aisle, they completed their family in 1986 with the birth of their son, who is now also an actor, Wyatt Russell.
“Mom said that’s when she fell in love with Kurt,” Kate said in a 2019 episode of her “Sibling Rivalry” podcast when speaking to her brother about the time her mother brought Kurt to meet her children. “Because she brought him back to the house and we had already been asleep, and we shared a room, and he sat down next to each of us, he sat down next to you first and watched you sleep and then came by.”
