Olivia Rodrigo’s Unraveled Tour ended with a magical sartorial surprise when her finale dress quite literally disappeared before fans’ very eyes.
Rodrigo, 23, rocked a pleated, white dress with a Peter Pan collar during her Friday, September 25, concert at Connecticut’s PeoplesBank Arena. While singing “The Cure,” the pop star stood beneath a manufactured rain shower, per viral social media footage.
As Rodrigo’s minidress got soaked, it intentionally dissolved to reveal a fitted red frock underneath that left fans completely stunned.
“OH WOWWW,” one X user wrote, with another adding, “She insane like ??????? GO GIRL.”
Rodrigo, who kicked off her Unraveled Tour on Friday, has been sporting babydoll-style dresses onstage as of late, sparking that have sparked rampant criticism.
“That’s been making me really upset,” she said on The New York Times’ “Popcast” podcast in May, addressing the backlash. “What’s really disturbing is, I feel like I actually wear — I have worn outfits that are revealing on stage. I’ve been on stage in a sparkly bra and little shorts, which is my right. That’s fun [and] I felt cool and comfortable in that, and that wasn’t inappropriate, but me fully covered up in a dress that people deem to be childlike was inappropriate.”
The Grammy winner continued, “I just think it shows how we really normalize pedophilia in our culture. “Also, it’s just this rhetoric that we’re fed as girls since we were so little, which is, ‘Don’t wear that because then a man is gonna sexualize your body, and it’s your fault.’”
When Rodrigo first began including babydoll dresses in her wardrobe, she hadn’t even considered the potential controversy.
“I was like, ‘This is so cool. I feel like I look like Kathleen Hanna or Courtney Love — all these people who are my heroes, she stated. “I just think if we start dressing in a way that’s like, ‘Oh, I don’t want some freak to think that I like am sexy like a baby or some crazy thing like that, it’s losing the plot a little.’”
