At its latest meeting, the Picayune City Council honored longtime youth sports mentor Geri Grubbs, recognized local pageant winners, appointed new fire department leadership, and approved the installation of a baby box.

Honoring Geri Grubbs

The council recognized Geri Grubbs for more than 41 years of service to the Picayune Youth Athletic Association (PYAA). Mayor Luke and council members praised his dedication, leadership, and mentorship, highlighting his lasting impact on generations of young athletes.

“I have a certificate of appreciation for Geri Grubbs in recognition of his outstanding service,” Mayor Luke said. “Your leadership and commitment to youth sports have strengthened our community, and your impact will be felt for years.”

Several community members and PYAA board members expressed gratitude for Grubbs’ influence on the program’s growth and the lives of young athletes. Grubbs appreciated the honor and thanked his family, mentors, and fellow volunteers.

“My years with PYAA were some of the most enjoyable of my life,” Grubbs said. “Watching young boys and girls excel in sports and life has been rewarding. I’m leaving PYAA in great hands and know it will continue to thrive.”

Recognizing Miss Pearl River County and Miss Pearl River County Teen

Miss Pearl River County, Baylee Albritton, and Miss Pearl River County  Teen Megan Wade were also honored at the meeting. Both young women recently completed orientation for the upcoming Miss Mississippi and Miss Mississippi Teen competitions, stepping stones to Miss America and Miss America Teen.

Albritton, a senior at Picayune Memorial High School and Pearl River Community College, spoke about her community service initiative, “Our Main Inclusion Project,” which focuses on de-stigmatizing and including individuals with physical and mental disabilities. Wade, a Pearl River Central High School junior, shared her initiative, “Adopt a Grandparent,” which connects volunteers with nursing home residents to provide companionship.

The council praised the young women for their leadership and dedication to the community.

New Fire Department Leadership

The council officially appointed Josh Abercrombie as the new fire chief and Jason Hunt as assistant. City Manager Harvey Miller spoke on their qualifications and dedication to the department.

“I have full confidence in these men,” Miller said. “Not only are they highly skilled and experienced, but they are also devoted family men and respected members of our community. They are ready to take on this responsibility, and I know they will serve Picayune well.”

Miller highlighted their years of service, strong work ethic, and leadership in the department. He emphasized that their promotion ensures continuity and excellence in fire services.

Abercrombie and Hunt expressed their gratitude for the opportunity and their commitment to continuing the fire department’s tradition of excellence.

“This week has been a whirlwind of emotions,” Abercrombie said. “We’re honored and privileged to serve, and we appreciate the trust placed in us. We look forward to working with city officials and the community to maintain and build upon the department’s legacy.”

Approval of Baby Box Installation

The council approved the installation of a baby box at the Central Fire Station, which will allow infants to be safely and anonymously surrendered. The project will be funded through private donations, and the Pearl River County Republican Women’s group will spearhead fundraising efforts.

“We deeply appreciate the council’s support in bringing a baby box to Pearl River County,” said Debby Benoit, representing the organization. “This is a vital step in providing a safe option for mothers in crisis.”

The council authorized the mayor to sign necessary documents for the project. Officials are also coordinating with contractors to finalize installation costs and security measures.
