After being down for most of today, it looks like the PlayStation Network is coming back online for some folks. PlayStation’s online services were down for most of the day, preventing PS5s and other consoles from accessing the store and connecting to online multiplayer.

Per the official PlayStation Network status page, it was a widespread issue. All services, from account management to gaming, and even the PlayStation Store were down for roughly seven hours.

Downdetector listed thousands of PlayStation Network outage reports starting from 10 AM, with users unable to access servers.

During the outage, the network status page mentioned that players “might have difficulty launching games, apps or network features” in addition to “getting products in PlayStation Store.” It also impacted access via web browsers, PS4 and PS3 consoles. Even the beloved niche handheld PS Vita console was affected, which reminds me that mine is gathering dust.

The only update provided by Sony related to a separate issue from overnight. Its official support account on X, AskPlayStation, explained an earlier issue that incorrectly displayed news information on PS5 dashboards.

After not being able to log in all day, I successfully signed into my account using the PlayStation App.

Predictably, gamers took to the PlayStation Subreddit to share memes making light of the situation. Some gamers used the outage as a chance to go outside and touch grass.

How to check the PlayStation Network status

While some people get back online, you can check PlayStation’s service status page for full details. Even if it says the servers are still offline, you might still be able to sign in.

It’s unclear what caused the outage, whether it’s server maintenance that took longer to complete or an infrastructure issue. Fortunately, it doesn’t appear to be a repeat of the 2011 outage that lasted more than 20 days, caused by a data hack.

Because of the outage’s nature, it also prevented access to single-player games requiring an online connection.
