FX has canceled the sitcom “English Teacher” after two seasons, ending a show that garnered critical acclaim while facing controversy over sexual assault allegations against its creator and star, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Deadline reports.
The network has not released a formal statement explaining its decision to end the series. The cancellation came less than two months after the entire second season was released on FX and its streaming affiliate, Hulu.
The show, which premiered in September 2024, followed the life of high school teacher Evan Marquez. Alvarez created and starred in the series alongside Stephanie Koenig, Enrico Colantoni, Sean Patton and Carmen Christopher. The sitcom’s first season earned nominations at the Critics Choice, WGA, and Film Independent Spirit Awards, Parade noted.
Allegations of sexual assault against Alvarez surfaced before the show’s premiere when Jon Ebeling, a former colleague, publicly accused the comedian, according to Variety.
At the time, an FX spokesperson said, “We reviewed the allegations presented to us by another media outlet prior to the show’s launch. Mr. Ebeling never reached out to us with any concerns. We will have no further comment at this time.”
When FX renewed the show for a second season, the network did not address the allegations. The renewal statement focused on the show’s performance, saying, “‘English Teacher’ was one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of 2024 and we are grateful to the producers, writers, cast, directors, and crew for the show’s creative excellence. We look forward to the new season.”
