It could be months before investigators determine the cause of death of a 30-year-old pregnant former Division I soccer standout as her tragic end remains a mystery.
Long Island native Kayla Saager-Beckley, a former Binghampton soccer player, collapsed and died unexpectedly 10 minutes after a workout last week in Tulsa, Oklahoma – but the local medical examiner said it’d be months before an official cause of death is determined.
“A report won’t be available until we have concluded all of our tests — which will take roughly three to six months,” a spokesperson for the Tulsa County Medical Examiner’s Office told The Post on Wednesday.
The former soccer star had recently married Tulsa University’s outside linebackers coach John Beckley, and died while pregnant with the couple’s first child, a daughter they had already planned to name Sawyer.
Tulsa head coach Tre Lamb revealed Saager-Beckley’s death during a press conference Monday.
“It’s just been a really hard week for [Beckley,] for us as a staff, our coach’s wives,” Lamb said.
“She was 30 years old. She was pregnant with their daughter, Sawyer,” he went on. “It’s been tough on our staff. We had a memorial for her last night. We just ask that you please pray for the Saager family, the Beckley family.”
The team would be donning special helmet stickers in her memory during their next game, he said.
Saager-Beckley’s alma-mater Binghamton University also announced the death last Thursday in a news release.
Saager-Beckley, who hailed from East Islip, scored 22 goals over two seasons at Binghamton, which described her as “one of the most feared strikers” to put on a Bearcats jersey.
She served as team captain during her time at the upstate New York university, graduating in 2019 after being named a two-time all-region player and 2017 America East Striker of the Year.
