Shasta County Superior Court has a new judge.
Patrick Deedon was appointed a Superior Court judge by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, the court announced on Monday. He is registered without political party preference.
Deedon’s appointment fills a vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Stephen H. Baker in June, said Court Executive Officer Cody Stenderup.
Patrick Deedon was appointed as a Shasta County Superior Court judge in November 2025. Deedon’s start date and case assignments are still being determined.
While officially retired, Baker had continued to hear cases through the Temporary Assigned Judges Program of the Judicial Council of California, which brings retired judges to handle cases in Superior Courts.
The retired judges can come from anywhere in the state to assist temporarily, but are in tight supply.
“We use temporary judges every week” to handle caseloads left by judge retirements, said Stenderup.
Shasta County Superior Court Judge Monique D. McKee also retired this year and her position remains vacant, said Stenderup.
According to his practice’s website, Deedon has a practice emphasis on civil law, insurance defense, public entity defense and accident injuries in state and federal jurisdictions for both private and public sector clients.
Deedon earned his Juris Doctor from Cal Northern School of Law in 2006 after being awarded a bachelor of arts degree in public administration, with an option in criminal justice, from California State University, Chico in 2002.
He has been a partner at Maire & Deedon since 2013 after joining the firm in 2006.
The most recent superior court judge appointments happened in 2023, when Newsom appointed public defender Kathryn Barton and prosecutor Benjamin Hanna as Superior Court of California judges.
Those two appointments followed the retirement of two judges in 2022: Judge Daryl Kennedy and Judge Cara Beatty.
