British supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has unveiled its inaugural airport store at Edinburgh Airport, signalling a new chapter in the company’s expansion strategy.

The venture aligns with a broader initiative to revamp the culinary and shopping amenities accessible to passengers and airport staff.

Situated before the security checkpoint and accessible through multiple entrances, the Sainsbury’s Local will operate 24/7, offering a selected range of Sainsbury’s value-driven, superior-quality convenience items.

The Local convenience store at Edinburgh Airport offers meal deals, freshly baked bread and pastries, an assortment of fruits and vegetables, meats, seafood and ready-to-cook meals.

It features a dedicated section that celebrates Scottish provenance by offering locally sourced products.

In a move to streamline the shopping process, customers can choose a Click & Collect service.

This feature allows travellers to order from Sainsbury’s subsidiaries Argos, Habitat and Tu Clothing, then collect at the airport.

The store reflects Sainsbury’s commitment to community engagement, with its 28-member team poised to support local charitable initiatives.

This includes the redistribution of surplus food through the retailer’s partnership with Neighbourly.

Sainsbury’s property, procurement and electric vehicle ventures director Patrick Dunne said: “We’re very excited to launch Sainsbury’s Local in a whole new setting for the first time today with the opening of our Edinburgh Airport store.

“We want to build on the resounding success of our other travel hub stores, for example in UK train stations, and we’ll be listening closely to feedback from customers in the coming weeks to learn more about what they want to see from this kind of Local. We then hope to bring Sainsbury’s unbeatable combination of outstanding value, quality food and great service to more airport locations in the UK.”

Sainsbury’s operates a network of 100 stores in Scotland, including supermarkets, smaller Locals and 60 Argos outlets. It has more than 7,000 employees across the country.

In November 2024, Sainsbury’s opened its new flagship store within the Silkstream development in West Hendon, London.

“Sainsbury’s opens convenience store at Edinburgh Airport ” was originally created and published by Retail Insight Network, a GlobalData owned brand.
