She may have come close, but Selena Gomez missed out on her first Oscar nomination. She was considered a Best Supporting Actress contender for her role in Emilia Pérez as Jessi, the wife of a Mexican drug lord who longs for freedom. However, when the nominations were unveiled Thursday, she missed the lineup that included her Emilia Pérez costar Zoe Saldaña, as well as fellow pop star Ariana Grande (Wicked), Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown), Felicity Jones (The Brutalist), and Isabella Rossellini (Conclave). See the complete list of Oscar nominees.

Coming into the nominations, Gomez ranked ninth for Best Supporting Actress in Gold Derby’s odds based on the combined predictions of our users. Previously, she and her Emilia Pérez castmates Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Adriana Paz jointly won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, after which Gomez made the cut at the Golden Globes and the BAFTA Awards. But she was snubbed by the SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards, which initially put her nomination in doubt. Nevertheless, Emilia Pérez emerged as the top Oscar nominee with 13 bids including Best Picture, Best Actress (Gascón), and Best Director (Jacques Audiard). It’s the most nominated film of all time not in the English language.

Peter Travers (ABC) called Gomez’s performance “dynamite,” while Richard Lawson (Vanity Fair) praised her role as “sharply played.” Peter Debruge (Variety) thought Gomez’s showcase song “Mi Camino,” which was shortlisted/nominated for Best Original Song, was a “scorcher.” Dana Stevens (Slate) said that Gomez “invests her melancholy mob-wife character with flashes of scabrous humor and a self-sabotaging streak of cruelty.” David Rooney (Hollywood Reporter) wrote that the actress “plays both the hard edges and the vulnerability of a woman whose life has been uprooted twice and who needs to find her own happiness.” While some have criticized the quality of her Spanish and her accent, Rooney argued that she “doesn’t let that inhibit her performance.”

Despite being overlooked for Emilia Pérez, Gomez is a three-time Primetime Emmy nominee for Best Comedy Series as an executive producer of Only Murders in the Building. That Hulu mystery series finally earned her her first acting bid from the Emmys, for Best Comedy Actress, in 2024. As a recording artist, she has had eight top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including the No. 1 single “Lose You to Love Me.” And she’s a two-time Grammy nominee, including Best Latin Pop Album for Revelación in 2022.
