The creator of Severance is teasing what fans can expect from season 3 of the hit Apple TV show.

“I can tell you that the feeling I had when we wrote the end of season 2, where we wrote it and I was like, ‘Oh, my God, people are gonna freak out about this. They’re gonna be mad, they’re gonna be yelling at the TV, but they’re gonna be excited.’ And then a couple of other key moments in season 2, I got that same feeling. I’ve had that feeling more writing season 3 than in any previous season,” Dan Erickson exclusively told Us Weekly at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards on Sunday, January 4, in Santa Monica, California.

He hinted that Severance viewers might have strong feelings about some key events that transpire in the new episodes.

“I think there are going to be a ton of moments that surprise people and rile people up, and I think it’s going to be weird and funny, and all of the things that hopefully people continue to love about the show,” Erickson, 41, continued.

The sci-fi psychological thriller made its debut on the streamer in 2022 and follows a group of employees at Lumon Industries who undergo a procedure to separate their work memories from their personal lives. Their work personas are known as “innies,” while their home identities are called “outies.”

The all-star cast includes Adam Scott (Mark), Britt Lower (Helly), Patricia Arquette (Harmony), Tramell Tillman (Milchick), Dichen Lachman (Gemma), Zach Cherry (Dylan), Christopher Walken (Burt) and more.

Erickson also shared that while Scott, 52, has been the main focus of past seasons, season 3 will continue to expand the storytelling to include all who work at Lumon Industries.

“I think that season 2 did that in a way, because we expanded to see the outie lives of more of the characters. And we certainly continue to follow that path a bit, but you know, at the same time, we are telling, ultimately, the story of these people, of this small group of people, this work family, and how they ultimately are the only thing that allows each other to survive in this corporate nightmare,” he told Us. “And so we want to continue to flesh that story out.”

Severance received 4 nominations at Sunday’s Critics Choice Awards, but ultimately, Tillman, 40, was the only one who walked away with a win, taking home the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Scott was nominated for Best Actor in a Drama Series, which went to The Pitt star Noah Wyle, and Lower lost Best Actress in a Drama Series to Rhea Seehorn for her role as Carol Sturka in Pluribus.

Severance was also up for the Best Drama Series award but was beaten out by The Pitt.

Little has been shared about season 3 of Erickson’s Severance, but the season 2 finale ended with a cliffhanger in the love triangle between Mark, his innie paramour, Helly, and his wife, Gemma.

In the finale, Gemma escaped Lumon Industries without Mark after he decided to remain on the severed floor with Helly.

The follow-up season is rumored to be slated for 2027, according to several reports.

Ben Stiller, who serves as an executive producer and director of the show, shared an update during a November 2025 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

He teased that season 3 will be out “soon-ish,” noting, “It’s tough because people do love the show and they’re always like, ‘When’s the next season? When’s the next season?’ And it’s always, ‘We’re working on it.’ We’ve only done 19 episodes over five and a half years.”

The first two seasons of Severance are now streaming on Apple TV.
