Two of the children got out on their own, and a bystander rescued a third.

Rescue teams pulled the fourth child – the boy who drowned – from the water. The other three were taken to UnityPoint-Health Trinity Rock Island.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m., the Rock Island Fire Department responded to Lake Potter, at 1800 Sunset Lane, for a child missing in the water. Upon arrival, responding crews learned that four children were swimming in the water and “became distressed,” the release says.

Prior to the arrival of the fire department, two children were able to get back to shore unassisted and one child was assisted to shore by a bystander. The fourth child still was missing in the water.

Rock Island Fire crews began rescue operations from shore and from the Rock Island Fire Department rescue boat, which was launched from Sunset Marina.

The Rock Island Fire Department was assisted by the Rock Island Arsenal Fire Department and the Moline Fire Department. Big River Rescue and Christian Aid Ministries also assisted with underwater divers and scanning equipment, the release says
