Teen Mom alum Mackenzie Edwards has been granted temporary custody of the two children she shares with ex-husband Ryan Edwards.
According to court documents obtained by Us, a Tennessee judge ordered on September 4 that the pair’s minor children remain in Mackenzie’s care.
“[Ryan] may have contact with the children only at the residence of the paternal grandparents and under the supervision of the paternal grandparents [Jen and Larry Edwards] during the times currently assigned to him in the current parenting plan,” the documents stated. “[Ryan] shall not drive or otherwise transport the children.”
The judge said Ryan’s wife, Amanda Conner, “shall not supervise, transport or be alone with the children.”
In addition, Ryan, 38, was ordered to have his fingernails clipped at a testing facility and have the specimen tested “for the longest scientifically supported lookback period.”
Us has reached out to Mackenzie and Ryan’s attorneys for additional comment. The Ashley’s Reality Roundup was first to report the news.
The judge’s ruling comes after Mackenzie, 29, filed an emergency petition to modify the parenting plan she shared with Ryan.
Mackenzie and Ryan previously signed a custody agreement in August 2025, which gave her 225 days a year with the kids and Ryan 140 days, including overnight visits.
According to court documents obtained by Us, the existing parenting plan had Mackenzie as the primary residential parent and provided that “neither parent shall use illegal drugs during parenting time.”
In documents, Mackenzie’s attorneys claimed that their client “has a good-faith basis to believe” that Ryan relapsed into substance abuse.
Mackenzie alleged that Ryan has used kratom, which is described by her attorneys as “a herbal substance that has a stimulant and opioid-like effect.” As of July, kratom has been banned in Tennessee, where Ryan resides.
Court documents also claimed that Mackenzie has a “close relationship” with Ryan’s parents Jen and Larry and “believes they are a positive influence in the children’s lives.” As a result, she does not want to sever the children’s relationship with their dad or with their grandparents.
“Immediate temporary relief is necessary to maintain the children in a safe and stable environment until [Ryan’s] sobriety and the safety of his household can be evaluated,” Mackenzie’s lawyers claimed in court documents. “The requested restrictions are narrowly tailored to protect the children while preserving safe family relationships.”
Ryan and Mackenzie called it quits in February 2023 after six years of marriage. Part of their love story was documented on Teen Mom as Ryan tried to coparent his oldest son, Bentley, with ex Maci Bookout.
In an April 2024 interview with Us, Bookout praised Ryan for the progress he was making in his health and wellness journey.
“Ryan is doing really well,” she exclusively shared with Us at the time. “I believe in a week, he’ll be a year sober, which I have never seen since his act of addiction really began. But he’s doing really well, doing the work.”
