Mike Elko appears to be sticking around College Station.
Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger reported Saturday that Elko and Texas A&M are finalizing a six-year extension worth more than $11 million annually.
The deal is expected to make him one of the 10 highest-paid coaches in all of college football.
Elko’s previous contract was incentive-based and paid him $7 million a year, which was 32nd in the country, per Dellenger.
The new contract keeps Elko at the school with several high-profile head coach openings looming across the sport.
Powerhouse programs like Penn State, Florida, LSU and Auburn, among others, are still looking for their next head coach, setting up what should be a wild coaching carousel.
Earlier Saturday, news emerged that former Penn State coach James Franklin is in early talks to become Virginia Tech’s coach.
The Aggies are enjoying an excellent season under Elko.
Heading into Saturday’s matchup against South Carolina, Texas A&M is sitting at 9-0 as the No. 3 team in the country with big wins over Notre Dame, LSU and Missouri.
It’s the first time the Aggies have been ranked in the top three since 1995.
They are one win away from their first 10-win season since 2012 and just their second since 2000.
Elko is in his second season in College Station after leading the Aggies to an 8-5 record in 2024.
He was hired by Texas A&M after going 16-9 in two seasons as Duke’s head coach.
Elko had previously served as the Aggies’ defensive coordinator from 2018-21 under head coach Jimbo Fisher before taking the job at Duke.
