(KRON) — The year is coming to an end, and several major events dominated the news cycle domestically and beyond, such as the 2024 United States presidential election and Summer Olympics in Paris.

According to Google Trends, here were the most searched terms and topics in the Bay Area in the last 12 months. The search engine broke down the results by the “San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose” region.

Google: Top Search Terms in SF Bay Area 2024

  1. “mike tyson vs jake paul”

Are there more Target or Walmart stores in the Bay Area?

These were the top search queries with the “biggest increase in search frequency since the last time period,” Google said. For example, the search term “election results” had a 1,800% increase in 2024 compared to the year before.

It wasn’t much of a surprise that the 2024 Election garnered so much interest within the Bay Area — which included a number of high-profile races such as the San Franciso mayoral race and the recalls of Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price and Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao.

Search topics that recorded significant increases among Bay Area users this year, according to Google, include Amazon, Olympic Games, Costco, ChatGPT, “election contest” and Donald Trump.

Costco had two new Bay Area locations open in 2024, including one in Pleasanton that was met with large crowds when it opened the day before Thanksgiving. ChatGPT started to trend throughout the year as more users had access to the artificial intelligence platform. Some stories associated with ChatGPT were controversial.
